Bajesdorp bouwt een permanente broedplaats
15 oktober 2021 - !WOON zet regelmatig een Amsterdamse wooncoöperatie in het zonnetje. Deze maand is dat Bajesdorp! Een bijzonder initiatief van bewoners en kunstenaars op het voormalige terrein van de Bijlmerbajes in Amsterdam-Oost. Met hulp van de gemeente Amsterdam en anderen ontwikkelen zij een coöperatieve vrijplaats met 20 appartementen en ateliers. Daarvoor hebben zijn een wooncoöperatie opgericht, de leden (en bewoners) zijn straks eigenaar en beheerder van het complex. We gaan in gesprek met mede-oprichter Femke Ravensberg en het kersverse lid Ana Bravo Pérez over hoe hun initiatief is ontstaan, wat hun groep bindt, wat hun initiatief bijzonder maakt, hun visie op wonen in Amsterdam, de financiering van Bajesdorp en de hobbels onderweg. In het verleden hebben we op dit terrein 9 huizen gekraakt van de voormalige gevangenis (Bijlmerbajes), de cipierswoningen. Dus we waren al een collectief. En toen [deze kans zich aandeed] dachten we: als we iets voor elkaar willen krijgen, dan moeten we het samen doen.’’ Ana: ‘’Ik denk dat wat ons als groep bindt de ‘spirit’ van samenwerking en collectiviteit is, en natuurlijk, de wens om in collectief verband te wonen, om onze eigen woningen en studio’s te bouwen.’’ Femke: ‘’Wij zijn als Bajesdorp, als project…heel anders in de stad. Wat we doen is dat we huizen bouwen om die vervolgens van de markt af te halen. Het zal nooit meer verkocht worden en niemand zal er winst op gaan maken.’’ Femke: ‘’[…] we geloven dat huizen er niet zijn om winst mee te maken. Wij geloven dat ze er zijn voor mensen om in te leven. Net als water, zou [een woning] toegankelijk moeten zijn voor iedereen, of je nu een kleine portemonnee hebt of een grote.’’ Femke: ‘’Een van de obstakels die we moesten overwinnen, was het overtuigen van de gemeente dat ons project heel belangrijk en waardevol was voor de stad. !WOON was een plek voor ons om naartoe te gaan voor advies, zeker op het gebied van dit soort politieke en strategische thema’s, zoals lobbyen en het overtuigen van politici. Ana: ‘’Een deel van het project zal worden gefinancierd met een lening van een Duitse bank waar we mee in onderhandeling zijn en we hebben nog een andere campagne gecreëerd… Femke vult aan: …We hebben een crowdfundingcampagne opgezet. We noemen het eigenlijk ‘Crowdlending’, omdat mensen ons geld lenen. We nodigen alle mensen uit Amsterdam, en daarbuiten, uit om te investeren in ons project. Mensen kunnen een obligatie kopen ter waarde van 250 euro. We hebben nog wat obligaten, nog zeven weken te gaan en nog niet al het geld binnen, dus je bent erg welkom [om te investeren] als je dit ziet! Beiden: ‘’Geniet van het proces en wees geduldig!’’ Achter het Amstelstation – aan de Wenckebachweg – ligt Bajesdorp. Voorheen stond hier een gezellig wijkje met woningen voor het personeel van de voormalige Bijlmerbajes, waarvan de bewoners zich sterk maakten om leegstand tegen te gaan en de buurt bewoonbaar te houden. Nu staat er een tijdelijk dorp en worden de voorbereidingen voor een nieuw Bajesdorp getroffen. Volgens de initiatiefnemers hoort een huis hoort geen handelswaar te zijn, maar een blijvende plek om te wonen en te leven. De bewoners halen we hun gebouw voorgoed van de vastgoedmarkt af. Dit noemen zij ‘de vrijkoop van Bajesdorp’. Zo blijven de woonruimtes en ateliers blijvend betaalbaar voor mensen uit Amsterdam. In tegenstelling tot de meeste broedplaatsen heeft Bajesdorp een permanent karakter en kunnen vele generaties er betaalbaar wonen, werken en recreëren. Hoe ze dat voor elkaar krijgen lees je op hun website. ENGLISH VERSION: Regularly we put a housing cooperative in Amsterdam in the spotlight, this month it’s…Bajesdorp! A special project initiated by residents and artists on the former site of the ‘Bijlmerbajes’ in Amsterdam East. With help from the municipality and others they set up a cooperative to build 20 apartments and studios, the members will own and manage the complex themselves. A conversation with co-founder Femke Ravensberg and new member Ana Bravo Pérez about the beginning of Bajesdorp, what binds them as a group, their vision on housing, the financing of their project and the hurdles along the way. Femke: The idea of setting up a housing cooperative was quite logic to us. As we were already a group, we had squatted 9 houses of the former prison (Bijlmerbajes), the guards houses. So we were already a collective. And so we already were thinking like: anything we do, If we want to make something possible, we have to do it together. Ana: I think what binds us as a group, is the spirit of cooperation, I think the spirit of collectivity and of course, the desire and wish to have a collective housing, to build our own houses in the studios. Femke: We as Bajesdorp as a project…we are very different in the city. So what we do is actually we build a house and we take it off the market. It’s never going to ever be sold again. Nobody’s ever going to make profit on it. Femke: […] we believe that houses are not to make profit. We believe that they are there for people to live in. Like water, It should be accessible for everyone, whether you have a big wallet or a small one. Femke: Well, one of the hurdles that we had to take, was how to convince the municipality that our project was really important and valuable for the city as well. So !WOON was always a place for us to go to for advice, especially on these political strategical issues that we had, like lobbying and how to convince politicians. Ana: A part of the project is going to be financed through a loan that we are negotiating with a German bank and then we have well, another campaign that we have created… Femke: So, we set up a crowdfunding campaign. We call it Crowdlending, because people are lending us money and basically we invite every people, all the people in Amsterdam to invest in our project and people from outside of Amsterdam too. So people can buy a bond which is ‘obligatie’ in Dutch. And these are 250 euros. We still have some bonds and we still have seven to go and not yet finished. We don’t yet have all the money. So you’re very much invited if you see this! Enjoy the process and be patient! Bajesdorp is located behind the Amstel station – on the Wenckebachweg. Previously, a cosy neighborhood with squats, whose residents put an effort in keeping the neighborhood lively by occupying and fixing the vacant houses. Now there is a temporary village and preparations for a new Bajesdorp are being made. According to the initiators, a house should not be a tradable object, but a permanent place to live. The founders and future residents will therefore remove the property from the real estate market for good. You can read how they do that on their website.
